79th Anniversary of the Signing of the Social Security Act

Today marks the anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act. President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act during the midst of the great depression in 1935. The act initially only covered a limited number of workers in commerce and industry and provided only retirement benefits. Subsequently, it was expanded to provide additional retirement benefits and disability benefits to individuals unable to work as a result of disabilities.
